چکیده

This study compared seven growth models using body weight measurements from 300 progeny obtained from unselected random bred parents. The study which lasted for 20 weeks was carried out at the University of Maiduguri Livestock Teaching and Research farm. R 2 values for the Asymptote regression, Exponential, Gompertz, Logistic, Monomolecular, Richards and Weibull models were 0.994, 0.935, 0.997, 0.997, 0.998, 0.998, 0.998 and 0.999 respectively. The Weibull model had the highest coefficient of determination (R 2 ) value (0.999) and Exponential (0.935) least. In contrast, the exponential model had the highest MSE (Mean Square Error), SD (Standard Deviation) and AIC (Akaikes Information Criterion) values while Weibull model had the least. The exponential had the poorest fit (higher MSE, SD and AIC values and lower R 2 ) while the Weibull, Gompertz and Richards models best described the data in that order (lower MSE, SD and AIC values and higher R 2 ). In order words, the nonlinear models described the data better than linear. Therefore, based on goodness of fit criteria; R 2 , MSE, SD and AIC values, the weibull model best described live weight data of the Japanese

Response to Selection for Body Weight in Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

The present studyinvestigated the impact of selection for body weight (BW) on productive performance, predicted BW and genetic improvement of related traits in Japanese quail. Base population, selected parent and F1 progeny were tested. Pens and cages were used for rearing and breeding. A total of 240 birds in two successive generations, 27 sires and 54 dams (as selected parents) were used. Bod...

Effect of Vegetable Oil Source and L-Carnitine Supplements on Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics and Blood Biochemical Parameters of Japanese Quails (Coturnix japonica)

An experiment was conducted to study the effects of soybean, linseed and sunflower oil (various sources of fatty acids) with and without L-carnitine supplements (0 and 50 mg kg-1) on performance, blood biochemical parameters and carcass traits of Japanese quail. One hundred and ninety-two of 7-day old female Japanese quail were randomly assigned to 6 dietary treatments with 4 replicates and fed...

Divergent selection for four-week body weight in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica): response to selection and realized heritability

The Japanese quail has been utilized as a research species in establishing the genetic relationships that may also be present in other species. Divergent phenotypic selection for 4-wk BW was conducted for three generations in high (HW) and low (LW) lines. Within each line, 50 females and 25 males were selected among 600 birds, based on 4-wk BW. Mean BW at 4 wk of age in the base generation was ...

This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of two levels of dietary oregano essential oil (OEO) on growth performances, biochemical, hematological parameters, and intestinal histomorphology in Japanese quail. A total number of 99 quail chicks were divided into three groups (33 quails per group): Control, OEO 150 mg kg-1, and OEO 300 mg kg-1 treated groups for 42 day...
